Will Irvine Hitting on all Cylinders
#7 V'Cat Will Irvine has evolved into arguable the hardest hitter on the defense. As of game 5 Will was tops on the team in assists but # 1 in bone crushing hits. In the win against Newmarket, he made any Storm player who main decent yardage pay for it if they entered his sights. In this clip, Will de-cleated the Newmarket back right in front of the MTW bench.

Donald Wilson 6 0 0 3 9

 Walker Monroe(FG)

Well, Northerns loss to Donald Wilson from Whitby in the Metro Bowl Semi's Thursday meant different things to MTW and Red Night fans. For the latter it means the end of a very good season but a revealing of an Achilles heal, for the former it means no more Wildcat players to watch and the official end to 2008 fall season. Time to turn focus for Winter Camp in January. Now to the game and the  major impact our MTW Northern players had on it despite the loss. On Wilsons first drive the secured one first down then hit one of their tall receivers right over the middle at a depth of about 15 then outran the Northern D for the score. The missed PAT made it 6-0 early. But the same thing happened against Birchmount a week before so no worries right? Northern then followed up with a decent drive ending in a 32 yard field goal setting up what looked to be a scoring battle. Not so fast. The next 2 drives ended in punts and the second quarter. Then #4 (above) Eric Black picked off a pass and took it to the Wilson 27. The Northern O went backwards and went 3 and out, opted for the fake punt which was no good. Then we had another two 3 and outs until Wilson fumbled into the hands of Livingston at midfield. Again the Red Knight could do nothing  and started a set of three more 3 and outs. Then Wilson got it going from just inside their own side of the field when Livingston upped his game. Ha rag dolled the Wilson QB for a 13 yard sack leaving Wilson to set up for a field goal, which of course he blocked. That ended the half 6-3 Wilson .  The 3rd quarter started with a Northern 3 and out leaving a Wilson to start at their 20. Then both MTW'ers Gabriel Crozier and Livingston had two huge sacks forcing Wilson to punt. Northern again went 3 and out and a shanked punt ended the quarter with Wilson at midfield. Then another Wildcat Kadeem Stephenson playing tackle pounced on a Wilson fumble and the Knights seemed to have the momentum. Problem was they couldn't do anything with it as was the case after the Black int. After a Northern punt, Wilson took it down to the Knights 20 where the kicked a field Goal for a 9-3 lead but still a single possession ball game.  Northern began their final drive on their 35 and with help of some Wilson penalties made it to the Wilson 39 with a minute left. The killer was a 14 yard Wilson sack , a missed bomb by the Red and a loss of downs. Wilson ran out the clock and sealed the Northern fate. It came down to a lack of Northerns ability to move the ball consistently, far too many 3 and outs, poor field position and a failure to capitalize on turnovers. But to Northern's credit they got to within one game of the big High School show. As an MTW fan you had to be very proud of the contribution our Wildcats made to that team...it was a front and center. We'll give them a month or so to focus on their exams and then the focus changes to Wildcats football and warm summer Saturdays.
Isakov's Route to The Vanier Bitter Sweet, and Not Just Because of the Loss
The Western Mustangs almost pulled it off but ran into a revolutionary football program from Laval University of Quebec City in a Vanier Cup where most would say the Stangs were the David to les Rouge et Or's Goliath. It panned out in a 44-21 Laval win. Its all starts with the million dollar plus budget Laval is blessed with to all the other CIS programs operating on 5 digit budgets. Thats another story. Marco's season was not quite as he expected coming in. After injuring his hand in Spring Camp and rehabbing to the point that he played the last 4 games for MTW going 4-0 over that stretch until the Huronia Wildcard Loss. Marco had been told that he was #2 behind Michael Faulds at the QB Spot. But as the season started TV viewers and MTW fans were seeing Marco in civi's  on the sidelines.  This is the result of head Coach Marshall's son Donnie being moved up to the # 2 spot two days before the season opener, all the while being told by Western coaches that he would have chances to earn back the # 2 spot. So we are left with a frustrated Marco who has been told by Faulds that he will be back for a 5th year and of course Donnie will be back so in Marco's words "I'm a little bit lost right now as to my future here. If Faulds does come back and Donnie stays than likely next year will be the same as this year, a whole lot of riding the pine without padding on!" That family dynamic between coach and son can be a tough one to deal with in Marco's place but he is handling like the man he is. Besides being a little "bummed out" he expects the situation not to be a distraction as he moves forward. But he feels as do people who understand his football mind and skills he can play at that level so riding the pine would be a travesty. We'll keep in touch with Marco to see how things pan out.

The Northern Red Knights, complete with 13 Wildcats, came into the TDSB final after two shut out wins while opponent Birchmount Park just squeaked past Don Bosco by a point in their semi-final. The first quarter went back and forth with a Northern missed Field goal  and after another Birchmount 3 and out Northern set up for another 30 yard FG only to fake it and throw to Livingston who couldn't hold onto the ball. At the end of the quarter with Birchmount in a punting situation Livingston blocked the punt leaving Northern on the BP 10. From there QB Kyle Stenhouse hit #72 Martin Pesek for the go ahead TD at 7-0. On Birchmounts next possession a Livingston sack left them at 2nd and 16 deep in there own zone when they hit for a screen down the south sideline for  TD. Tie game. The 2nd quarter then ended with both teams exchanging field goals and BP opening up their passing game which as the half time whistle blew Northern D. Coordinator Tom Gretes knew his defense had to address. The second half started with a strong opening drive by Birchmount using the pass and deep in the Northern zone on second down they fumbled in the Northern end  zone giving the ball back to Northern on their 20. Northern was forced to punt in their own zone leaving BP decent field position. They were able to drive into the Northern zone where they setup for a 30+ yard field goal that was wide right and MTW CB Eric black ran it out to the 1 yd line where the Birchmount tackler was penalized for  a facemask and then Northern had it at the 35. A time consuming drive ended with what was the beginning of the Micheal Livingston Show. Northern came out with Micheal as the left wideout and took advantage of his huge height advantage on the BP corner by playing pitch and catch to Micheal inside the Birchmount red zone. As the 4th quarter began the Red Knights then ran the same play into the end zone to Livingston who snared the Stenhouse pass for the TD and a 17-10 Northern lead. From that point on the game was played in the Birchmount zone. Three and outs and a shanked punt left Northern inside the BP 35 and again they ran the fly route to Livingston for the second TD for him and Northern on the 4th quarter. Another loss of downs by Birchmount then ended with Northern's RB Alex Heller (kicker for 2007 JCats) taking in from about the 15. That's did it and Birchmount had nothing left and Red Knights now go on the play Wilson in the Metro Bowl Semi's next week. It was clear all the Wildcats on the field played huge roles for the Red Knights. Kadeem Stephenson played both FB and Nose tackle. Livingston was solid at DE and wideout, oh did I mention he also had a forced fumble? Gabe Crozier and Eric Black solidified the left outside and deep with Etan Katz kept the right edge closed off for the most part. James Fanais played despite a cast on a   broken hand but blocked well. Farhad Gadjyev was a wall up the middle  and Grant McAdam open holes for Heller and protected his QB fearlessly. Gareth Andrew and Ben Turner-Bob made plays. Unfortunately Jacombe and Brandon Williams were out with injuries. Congrats to all our Cats and the Northern squad for a great win!
Black and SVSU Miss Playoffs but Accolades Continue to Pour in For Matty Down South
We posted a story about the amazing week former MTW VCat Walk of Famer Matt Black had last week after being announced as NCAA GLIAC DII defensive player of the week and being selected to the 1st ALL Conference All Star team. Last night, Nov 18, Mat, starting corner for the Cards'  got the call that he has been invited to the East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Virginia. Matt says in an email to tw.com "it definitely feels great, its a goal I set for myself way back in January when we were lifting and running in the winter, so it good to see all my hard work finally pay off." This last 4 days or so may help offset the disappointment of not making the GLIAC playoffs despite a 7-3 record. That is one tough division.  "The East Coast Bowl is an annual college football All-Star game that features the most elite Division I-FCS, II, III and NAIA college football players from across the Mid-Atlantic region. In Matt's own words "...I'm pretty excited about that cause it gives me another chance to show the NFL scouts what I have to offer and hopefully entice one of them to give me a shot." So What's next ..."its just time to get back in the gym and on the track hard and get ready from the bowl games and pro days coming up." We're excited for you too Matt. What an achievement! Good Luck!
VCat Duo Post Big Numbers In the Fall

Justin Babin Boris Isakov
MTW/Lawrence Park Video MTW Highlights | Lawrence Park/MTW Video
Two of the receivers for the VCats in 2008 expected to take over after the graduation of Justene Edwards and Tim Hayos are Justin Babin (LP#2) and Boris Isakov (LP#80). And if their performance this fall is any indication we may have a new set of stars in the making and not skip a beat in producing great receivers year in and year out as we have with Kevin Logan (now at Lafayette in NCAA DII), Shawn Gore (Bishops), Mike Mizerski (Manitoba), Cam Worsley (York), Ricky Clarke (CJFL) and  Robin Legault (York). Quite a list of awesome receivers and one time OVFL League leaders. Lets take a look at the number for Justin and Boris, both playing at Lawrence Park this year. Justin played 6 games, had 11 TD's, 9 receiving, one rushing and one on a return. In terms of yardage he had 1100 all-purpose including 615 receiving on 23 receptions for an average of 26.7 yards, 260 on 11 carries and 225 on 8 returns. Boris scored 4 TDs but had the game tying 2pt convert against Central. He also amassed 710 yards on 30 catches for a 23.3 yard average per catch. By loose comparison, 2008 MTW duo of Hayos and Edwards had 503 and 372 yards and 4 TDs each in 8 games. Different Leagues and competition yes but it gives you an idea. Babin and Isakov helped LP accrue 125 points for which was second only to Northern in the conference and 37 points ahead of the third place team Central Tech meaning these guys accounted for half the LP points in 2008..These two will now take a breather until winter camp in January and hopefully continue to contribute like this for MTW is 2009. Great seasons guys!

lBlack Named GLIAC Player of the Week and 1st Team All-Star at Saginaw Valley State.
Former All Star VCat Corner Matt Black, older brother of our own Eric Black, has been bestowed two honours this week for his SVSU Cardinals in the NCAA Division II GLIAC Conference. First for his efforts against Ferris State he was named GLIAC Defensive Player of The Week. Black racked up four tackles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a blocked punt in SVSU’s 26-14 win at Ferris State. Black blocked a first quarter punt that was returned for a touchdown, then would come up with a fumble recovery in the second quarter, and he would again jump on another loose ball late in the third quarter. Black also grabbed his fifth interception of the year at the start of the fourth quarter in the 26-14 win. Then to top it off he was named to the GLIAC 1st team defense All-Star squad. He ranked third in the conference with 5 interceptions including a 19 yarder for a TD against Northern Michigan.
Summer MTW Football Brings New Dynamic to the High School Game
For those of us who have been around high school football for a few decades or even as recently as the early to mid 90's will have noticed a difference, not just in the quality of play but in the relationships between players between the two teams. It was especially noticeable in this years TDSB playoffs when Northern played both Lawrence Park and East York on their way to the TDSB Final Friday at 2pm against Richview. The quality of the game is noticeable as many of the players have been playing an extra season in the summer, in our part of town it's MTW football, prior to beginning high school ball where the competition generally is of a slightly lower level. So players not only have played and practiced more but their confidence level is elevated as they enter the fall game. But its the second point that those of us involved in both the summer and high school game have noticed and can be viewed as a point of pride in what we are doing at MTW. A decade ago and prior to, when a two teams played, the closest they came to civil behavior was a programmed shaking of the hands after the game and then the visiting team headed straight to the bus. But now those who witnessed either of the the two Northern games against Lawrence or East York saw something else. It was enough to have parents contact tw.com to point out. In these two games witnesses saw 30+ MTW players between the three teams. Before the game you would see players shaking hands with opposing coaches who were their coaches during the summer. After the game, especially the the LP/ Northern tilt, you would see players from the two teams hugging each other and groups of MTW players from opposing high school teams, who fought together just a few months back, talking for extended periods of time, even as tears flowed from the losing players former teammates. This type of interpersonal dynamic is s side effect of MTW football most would not have expected but one that all involved in the Wildcat program can take great pride in. In Fridays final we have the many MTW/ Northern players and team taking on Richview and MTW player Mathieu Tonner (below left). Not quite the same in terms of numbers but don't be surprised if Tonner and some of his former teammates from Northern/MTW will be near the last off the field as they chat it up. Be proud MTW! We're having more of an impact than you think!

New 2009 MTW Executive Announced

In an effort to streamline and optimize responsibilities at the executive and management levels the following changes have been made for the 2009 season and beyond:

LPFAA Parent Company Board

President Chuck Richardson
Vice President Michael McCormick
Secretary-Treasurer Anne DeGrasse

MTW Executive

General Manager Kevin Gilligan
Director of Marketing Chuck Richardson
Director of Football Operations Tom Gretes
Director of Business Operations Michael McCormick
Under each executive position with be a series of managers who will handle subtasks such as fundraising, equipment, finances, amongst many others, as well as the three governors representing each team to the League. Announcements on manager positions will be made as soon as possible. Furthermore Head Coaching positions will also be announced shortly. This reorganization is a necessary step in handling a rapidly growing organization and an overburdening of individual personnel. Change was necessary and we are confident MTW is a better program for it.
Despite Dreary Season For York, Chris Ross's Story Is Far From It
We haven't talked too much about York  this year but we have to talk about one Lion.  Former VCat lineman Chris Ross has found a place with the Lions in '08 and that may not mean much being a top 10 defensive player but consider this. After the 2004 season where Chris was a mainstay on an Oline  that helped MTW beat the Thunder for the 1st time and get the VCats into the playoffs, Chris came down with a serious illness that made him lose extreme amounts of weight and strength. Anyone who saw Chris were very concerned about his health let alone whether he would play football again. But you cant keep a good man down. Hopefully coaching with the Wildcats helped him recover and  now a 6'2 214 lb  Chris is in the linebacker rotation at York. This year, he played in 5 games, had 14 solo's 2 assists, a sack, a pass break up and a forced fumble. A great story about a great guy
Queens Shocked By Gee Gee's But Two Gails and Former Cats Are OUA All-Stars
Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 OT1 Tot
Ottawa 0 17 0 6 0 23
Queen's 8 3 0 2 0 13
The team with the most Former MTW players for the last few years has been the Queens Golden Gails. In '08 there were no less than 10 XCats on a squad that entered the playoffs ranked #2 nationally. So when they came into the OUA Semi on Saturday there were few who gave Ottawa a chance. And after Queens took an early 8-0 lead that sentiment was solidified. But a huge 17 point 2nd quarter for Ottawa gave them a 17 - 11 lead. A shocked crowd at Richardson Stadium in Kingston then had to watch agonizingly as the Queens couldn't get any thing going on offence while the Gee Gee's played conservative ball control and added 6 in the 4th for the 23-13 win. The only positive for Queens that weekend was when two former VCats were named as OUA All-Stars. Former VCat tackle Dan Bederman (top left and right as Vcat), now a 6'1" 310 lb center was named to the 1st All-Star team, while Chris Smith (above left and rightas VCat), playing Sam linebacker cracked the 2nd team. Hopefully this takes a bit of the sting out of what Im sure they hoped would be a longer path through the playoffs.

Career game Against Western on National TV!
Former VCat Alex DePrato, now a starting safety for the Queens Gails, was all over the field on Saturday. He and several other former Cats dismantled the Western Mustangs (we were looking for Marco on the sideline) 43-16 with huge 2nd and 4th quarters. Perhaps the biggest play was turned in by DePrato, from CIS.com:
"with Queen’s up 9-1 and Western charging. Gaels free-safety Alex Daprato (Toronto) intercepted a Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) on the goal-line and returned the ball 94-yards. That play saw Giffin score his second of the game and put momentum on Queen’s side.

“It was the consequence of being at the right place at the right time,” said Daprato. “Definitely a momentum changer.”

“Daprato’s interception was the turning point in my mind,” continued Sheahan. “It’s going to be 9-8 if they scored. He turned it around and we go up 16-1. That was a huge play in the ball game.”
From that you get the impact of that play. But he also contributed 5.5 tackles on the day and was all over the ball. This from Alex after we contacted him:
"...we are entering an exciting time over here in Kingston. All the hard work is starting to show, and the wildcats support is very encouraging for every ex wildcat up here. I hope we are doing everyone back home proud. We are on our way to putting something special together but we still have a ways to go. Hopefully we can keep up the good work, and stay on the tube for you to keep on watching. Thanks for the message and im looking forward to another wildcats season"
Alex drops by every once and a while to MTW practice and/or games so if you see him, remind him of this effort. Way to go Alex from all at MTW!

Three Cats Make Toronto Star Top 25 High School Players to Watch
Livingston, McMann and Hyman Crack List

MTW players are usually represented very well on the Toronto Star's Top 25 and this year is no exception. Dominant VCat D End Micheal Livingston representing Northern should have some fun is the TSSAA and might go up against behemoth pancaker Tyson McMann, easily one of the best tackles in Toronto out of Newtonbrook. Then we have arguably one of the best players in the entire MTW program in RB Jamaal Hyman, who represents Chaminade in the fall. Way to go guys from all of us at MTW. We're watching so good luck!

Iceman II Leads LP To Exhibition Win Over Del

It started with his older brother Marco but now it's Boris leading his team. VCat Boris Isakov, who caught a TD pass from Western QB brother Marco against Huronia in the playoffs (see right), has made a big move over the last year with the Cats and the Panthers.  He's got the tools, great hands, tall and although not blazing speed, he can really run routes which make him a QB favorite. Came in handy as he contributes this TD catch and run in the 28-0 win over De La Salle. LP has some work to do to improve on  last years T1 semi against Northern but its a start and Boris is going to be key to any success the Panthers have.

Way to Go Matt!...
Selected in the 6th round from Saginaw Valley State

Northern Shuts Out Richview
Congratulations to the Northern Red Knights and its dozen+ MTW players, who blanked a very good Richview Saints and JCat Mathieu Tonner 10-0 Friday at Varsity Stadium in a defensive battle. Current VCat Eric Black (above left) had a fumble recovery for 20+ yards and several long punt returns, Livingston (right) had 2 sacks and blocked a field goal, Farhad Gadyev (below left) had 10 + tackles and Kadeem Stephenson (below right)playing nose tackle was in the Richview backfield all day. The Red Knights will take on Birchmount Park in the Toronto Final  at Esther Shiner 1pm Thursday Nov. 20 before the Metro Bowl playdowns begin.
King City Upset in York Final, Kovshoff Now Looks to MTW Winter Camp
After defeating G.W. Williams 17-0 in the regular it was not surprising that King City came into the TII York Final as the favorites. But that's why they play the games. Williams came into the final with a different came... they pounded on the KC defense and their defense played an aggressive blitzing type defense that KC was not prepared for. Russell himself had 7 tackles for KC but it was not nearly enough as the scoreboard showed a 33-6 upset by Williams . Joe stakes some solice in that as he says "Now i get to train for MTW Varsity where I am this year competing for a starting spot. Look forward to MTW soon!". It will be good to see you to Russell!

HS PLAYOFFS

Kovshoff and King City Going To Tier II York Region Final.
2008 J'Cat Russell Kovshoff, brother of former VCat Joel, has been a big part of King City's road the the TII York Regional Final against G.W. Williams at Esther Shiner Saturday Nov. 15th at 1pm. Last week he had 6 tackles and 1 fumble recovery in a 30-0 drubbing of Maple. Good Luck Russell!
Livingston Unstoppable In TDSB South Win over East York
If there was a city wide MVP award in Metro Toronto VCat/Northern player Micheal Livingston (#77 left with Northern) would have to be a candidate. Against East York in a 28-0 white wash of East York in the South Regional Final, Micheal (below rt as a Cat) had 7 sacks and 2 TD's, one on a pass into the end zone from a short yardage set and one one a 70 yard fumble recovery to pay dirt from his D Den position. He had another long interception TD return that was called back. Ring a bell? This is an force in defensive football football in this city whether it be OVFL or High school ball. Scary Good. Good Luck against Richview Mike.
Tonner and Saints Win West Title...Northern Next

2008 JCat Mathieu Tonner (#1 far left) has had a pretty good 7 months of football. First he is part of a 7-1 regular season MTW effort then he goes on the win the TDSB West  Senior Title over Michael Power in a tight one 16-14. They now go on to play Northern Friday at Varsity Stadium 2pm.

UNI NCAA Div II

Black Awesome On D in Every Way in Saginaw's Win in NCAA DII Action
Former VCat Star Matt Black was just huge in his Cardinals win over Ferris Sate to end the season. get this line...3 solos, 1 assist, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, 2 pass breakups and 1 blocked punt that lead to a SVSU TD. What a game! The 7-3 Card's now wait to see if they can squeeze into that 6th and last playoff spot

UNI Divisional Finals

Blair Propels Huskies to AUS Title over FX
AB keeps on rolling. In Saturdays AUS final against St. Francis Xavier, Allistair had 16 carries for 83 yards as leading rusher for his team in a tight 29-27 victory. A lot tighter than the 49-7 drubbing they laid on X a few weeks back. This leads to a matchup with Marco Isakov and the Western Mustangs in the Mitchell bowl next Saturday the 16th on The Score 3;30pm in London.

Fanais Big In Win Over Lawrence Park in 1st Round
Now VCat James Fanais may have missed the 2008 MTW season due to a arm injury but he has come on strong for the Northern Red Knights in the fall high school season. In a hard fought 35-21 win over the Panthers in the TDSB Tier I South Semi Finals, James had 3 TD's to propel his team to victory and a date with East York in the South Region Final.

UNI PLAYOFFS

Smith and Deprato OK in Loss Leaving Only 1 Former Cat left to Watch
In the shocking 23-13 loss to Ottawa the twin towers Alex DePrato and Chris Smith notched 5 solos and 2 solos respectively. This loss leaves only Saint Mary's running back Alistair Blair  as the lone former Cat to watch. Allistair led his team in rushing with 568 yards on 76 carries, 3 TD's, a long of 48, 81.14 yards per game and 7.47 yard per rush. We wish AB all the best and hope we can watch him in the Cup in a week.

UNI WEEK 9/10

Mizerski Finishes Season Strong Despite Team Missing Playoffs
Although his Manitoba Bisons lost their final three games to miss the Canada West playoffs, former MTW VCat superstar Mike Mizerski had some of his best games of the season. I week 9's 25-19 loss to Calgary, Mike weny 7 for 71 yards and a TD. In week 10 against Regina, Zersk went 5 for 53 in a 17-12 loss. Watch this guy next year, he is coming into his own!.
AB Big for Huskies as they Go to AUS Final
Former MTW hammer back has had a very good year for Saint Mary's and finished strong in his last two regular season games against St FX and Mount Allison. Against X Allistair went 7 for 62 rushing and 1TD on a 24 yard run to green in a 49-7 win. The next week he had 53 yards on 5 rushes in a 31-16 win over the Mounties.  They go up against St FX again in the AUS final Nov. 8 at 1pm.
Bishops Misses Playoffs But Gore Becoming Key Catch for Gaiters
Former VCat receiving threat and part of the super tandem with Mizerski in '06 continued his soled season in week 9. George also went 2 for 2 passing with a TD to round out a very productive day  for the former MTW veteran. Not surprising though, he has pedigree with his father, former OUA coach of the year Tom Gretes, also a member of the MTW executive and coaching selection committee.  Name  Andrew Shafto
 Position  Runnung Back/Slot
 Status  Varsity 1st year/ 2nd yr  player
 School  Lawrence Park
 Number  22
 Height  6'
 Weight  180
Strengths  Elusive, Breaott tackles, Field Vision
 Outlook
Andrew is a multidimensional player who sees the field very well. He complimented the JV Robinson/Hyman attack in 2007 by not only being a running threat himself but also as a blocker. As a ball carrier, he has deceptive speed and excellent balance, allowing him to break the first tackle and forcing the defense to be sure  when dealing with him. Andrew should be a great fit into to varsity offensive system which will take advantage of his hands in the pass attack and complimentary running game.
